Abstract
A study has been conducted on the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and hematocrit, determined by WINTROBE-LANDSBERG¢¥S method, on a series of 156 healthy pregnant women, on 61 healthy parturients, on 54 healthy new-born infants, and on 61 healthy nonpregnant women. The results were as follows:
1). In non-pregnant women, the mean ESR was 9.43 mm. in one hour and the mean value of hematocrit was 41. 11 ml. per 100 ml. of blood.
2). In pregnant women, there was a steady rise in the ESR from 14.5 mm. in one hour in the second month of pregnancy to 35. 12 mm. in the tenth month. The mean value¢¥, of hematocrit in the former half of pregnancy was 38.42 ml. per 100 ml. and 35.63 ml. per 100 ml. in the latter half months.
3). The mean value of hematocrit and ESR showed no significant differences between the first or second stage of, labor and the tenth month of pregnancy.
4). In new-born infants, the mean ESR was 1. 12 mm. in one hour and markedly slower than that of their mothers. The mean value of hematocrit was 53. 0. ml. per 100 ml. and remarkably higher than that of their mothers.
5). The mean value of hematocrit and ESR for healthy new-born infants showed, no significant differences between male and female.
